Currently
Live MVP. A free, no-signup houseplant-care and gardening reference: care guides for houseplants, how-to-grow guides for vegetables, herbs, and flowers, plus USDA-zone-tailored planting and harvest timing from your zip. Favorites and zone persist in local storage, nothing leaves your browser. Analytics now fire on the qualifying actions, photos cover all 20 deep plants, and a zone-reminder demand test is live. The catalog is still thin against a giant category, and the whole bet rides on ranking for the climate-aware gardening wedge.

How I know it's working

How I built it
Botanical Panic started as a fun, owned-domain plant app, and then I ran the full product process on it the way I would for a client. The verdict was humbling in a useful way: in one of the most saturated, best-funded consumer app categories that exists, having care guides is not a wedge. Planta, Greg, and PictureThis have tens of millions of downloads, photo identification, and mature paywalls between them. A free reference with no plant-ID cannot win on we also have care info.
What the discovery surfaced
Three findings became the spine of everything. First, this is a content and SEO product wearing an app's clothes, so distribution, not features, is the only real constraint. Second, the one genuinely under-served wedge is climate-aware gardening: enter your zip, see a planting calendar tailored to your June, which the houseplant apps lack and the Almanac under-delivers. Third, the browser-only, no-account design is both the trust story and the ceiling, because the category's whole retention engine is accounts plus push reminders, which a local-storage tool structurally cannot do.
That reframed the North Star away from per-user engagement and toward Monthly Engaged Plant Sessions: a session-based number that rewards the SEO engine and the tool's conversion job at once, which is honest about a product where most visits are one-shot and anonymous.
What shipped, and what is honest about it
The MVP went live with both domains in one tool, zip-to-zone timing, and per-plant and topic SEO pages. Then came the unglamorous but load-bearing work: instrumentation so MEPS can finally be a number, photos for all the deep plants for trust and image search, a stub-to-deep promotion pass so guides stop dead-ending, and a zone-reminder demand test to probe the one credible return hook before building any backend.
The honest risk is the one the pre-mortem named first: a modest-authority personal site may simply not rank in a farmed category. So the bet is narrow on purpose, win the zone-aware gardening wedge where a small site actually can rank, or accept that this stays a fun portfolio piece. Everything past the Now slice is a bet to re-underwrite once real Search Console and MEPS data exist.

Pre-mortem risks

highMitigation: Focus the winnable zone and long-tail wedge, add schema and internal linking, and accept slow compounding. If the wedge shows no Search Console traction in two quarters, demote to a static fun piece.
The large content workstream stalls, the catalog stays thin, and guides keep dead-ending mid-answer.
highMitigation: Treat catalog growth as a sustained background workstream, ship stubs first, and consider AI-assisted drafting with human verification. Stub promotion has already started.
MEPS never grows because traffic is one-shot and there is no return mechanism.
mediumMitigation: Accept one-shot for the diagnosis cohort, and build the seasonal digest or collection for the gardener who actually can return across a season.
Reminders demand a backend Kate will not maintain, so the only retention hook never ships.
