Moist, fertile, well-draining soil; pH 6.0–7.0.

Keep evenly moist; drought turns the leaves harsh and triggers bolting.

Direct sow every 2–3 weeks for a steady supply, in spring and again in fall. Cut outer leaves or shear the whole plant an inch above the crown and it regrows.
