Rich, firm soil with plenty of compost; pH 6.5–7.0.
Even 1.5 in/week. A sudden drink after a dry spell splits the heads.

Start indoors and transplant, or direct sow in summer for fall. Harvest when the head feels firm; cut and leave the roots and you may get a second flush of small heads.
Good with Beet, Onion, Dill, Celery, Marigold. Keep apart from Tomato, Strawberry, Pole bean.
