Rich, loose, well-draining soil with compost; pH 6.0–7.0.
Keep lightly moist through spring growth, then stop watering a couple of weeks before harvest so the bulbs cure dry.

Plant individual cloves in fall, pointy end up, and mulch over winter. Each clove becomes a full head by summer. Save your biggest cloves to replant; hardneck types also send up edible scapes in spring.
